Calendar of Events and Deadlines

December 9 – Kansas Beef Expo All-Breeds Sale, 11:00 a.m.

December 10 – Kansas Beef Expo Junior Show, 8:00 a.m.

February 10, 2007 – KSA Annual Meeting, Hays (see details below)

Annual Meeting - This will serve as your official notice for the Kansas Shorthorn Association Annual Meeting to be held Saturday, February 10, 2007, in Hays, Kansas.  We will begin eating at 12:00 noon, with the meeting scheduled to begin at 1:00 – 1:30 p.m.   There are still a couple of options for which location will work best, so the final details will be sent to you in the next couple of weeks.   Look for a postcard in the mail or by e-mail.  The plan is for everyone to purchase their own meal off the menu and no reservations will be required.  If you do not wish to eat, please join us for the meeting portion of the schedule.

Directory & Dues – At last year’s annual meeting, it was decided to print a new membership directory early in 2007 and Terry Conard volunteered to lead the effort.  THANK YOU TERRY!   Another decision made during that meeting was that the directory would be printed based on ads turned in by the date of the annual meeting and only memberships that had been paid on or before the date of the annual meeting would be printed in the directory.  If you have not paid dues after September 25, 2006, you will need to make sure they are paid on or before the date of the annual meeting.  No exceptions.  If the weather looks like it may prevent you from getting to the annual meeting, or you have another conflict, it is your responsibility to make sure your dues are paid prior to February 10, 2007.  The list of paid memberships will be printed at the conclusion of the annual meeting and sent with Terry for publication.  Likewise, ads and payment must be submitted either prior to or the day of the annual meeting.  As is our tradition, there will be a few special pages auctioned during the annual meeting.  These are the inside front cover, the page opposite that, the page opposite the table of contents, the two center pages, the inside back cover, the page opposite the inside back cover, and ½ of the back cover (5 ½” x 4 ¼”).  Selling only ½ of the back cover allows us to save a great amount by not purchasing envelopes.  If you plan to bid on the 2-page center section or the back cover, you need to be prepared to submit that ad the day of the meeting.  However, if you do not win that bid, you will also need to have an ad prepared for a single page format.  The cost for ads is as follows:  Full page=$125, Half page = $75, and business card size = $50.  The minimum bid for a special page will be $125.  These rates would also apply to any outside businesses you may want to solicit for ads.   Be sure to talk to all of your business partners including implement dealers, vets, customers, etc.

PLEASE COMPLETE THE FORM AT THE END OF THIS NEWSLETTER AND RETURN IT ALONG WITH YOUR DUES.  Also, due to the large number of Lifetime Members that we do not hear from often, I am asking that they also complete the form and return it to let me know you still want to be included in the directory.  If I do not hear from you, I will assume you do not want your name published in the new directory.

Expo – The Kansas Beef Expo is quickly approaching.  Everyone that gets this newsletter should have received a copy of the catalog in the mail.  You can also check www.kansasbeefexpo.org for details if you have internet access.   There are a few changes from previous years, so please review the schedule and make your plans accordingly.

There are a few changes to the catalog that should be noted:

1.      Lot 1 b & c has changed from a choice of 2 heifers to a choice of 4 heifers.  All are sired by JA/RF Voyager and the printed lot 1c is one of the four.

2.      Lot 2a – The dam is Little Cedar Quantum Gal, not ASF Quantum Queen 836.

3.      Lot 8 is out and will be replaced with an Appendix show heifer prospect.

4.      Lot 12 is consigned by Dennis Pearson, not Roux Shorthorns

5.      Lot 14 should read “Polled – This is a good bull to use on your Red Angus to make Durham Reds, or any other breed to cross with.  We will keep the bull for FREE until Feb. 2007, and work with you on delivery.  Tested TH Free.”

Board of Directors Meeting – The KSA Board of Directors is not planning to meet in conjunction with the Kansas Beef Expo.  If you have concerns or topics that need to be discussed, please contact one of the board members so the board can resolve any issues as soon as possible.

2008 Junior Nationals – In case you haven’t heard, Kansas and Missouri will be teaming up to host the 2008 Junior National Show in Kansas City.  Chair of the committee is Nancy Grathwohl and Fund-Raising Chair is Troy Smith.  If you would like to help in any capacity, please contact one of these individuals and they will assist you in using your talents where they are best suited.  Watch the newsletter for more updates as the time draws nearer.

CONGRATULATIONS - TM Dazzler 54P ET was named the National Champion Bull at the NAILE in Louisville, KY, on Nov. 13, 2006.  “Hank”, as he is known, is owned by M Bar Shorthorns, Troy & Sommer Smith, Walton, and was bred by Trademark Ranch and Katie Marston, Manhattan.  If you were at the State Fair, you will know this same bull was Grand Champion that day as well.  Great Job!  All the Kansas cattle looked fantastic and their breeders/exhibitors deserve a big round of applause.

Wrap-up – As always, if you need to contact me for any reason, please phone me at 620.585.2278 or by e-mail at Harman@ourtownusa.net.  Hope to see everyone soon, but if we don’t see you at the Expo, have a great holiday season, a prosperous New Year, and visit us at the Annual Meeting, February 10, 2007.
